Mercer University to Conduct 'Be a Good NeighBEAR' Service Day Saturday

September 10, 2014

MACON – Mercer University's Center for Leadership and Volunteerism will conduct its annual "Be a Good NeighBEAR" service day Saturday in neighborhoods across Macon.

Over 500 students, along with faculty, staff and their families will participate in service projects in Beall's Hill, Bellevue, Pleasant Hill and Village Green in conjunction with the neighborhood associations in those areas. Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful has donated supplies for trash cleanup.

"This is a terrific opportunity to connect Mercer and Macon community members on a neighborhood beautification project and keep building sustainable community partnerships," said Hannah Vann, coordinator of community engagement at Mercer. "We're so grateful for our many community partners for working so hard to help us make this event a success."

Volunteers will be served breakfast, provided by the Office of Housing and Residence Life, at 8 a.m. The event will kick off at 9 a.m. on Cruz Plaza at the center of the Macon campus. After volunteers drive to their designated neighborhoods, they will hear a brief presentation about the history of the neighborhood and its residents. Beginning at 9:45 a.m., volunteers will work with neighborhood residents on revitalization projects. They will return to campus between noon and 1:30 p.m.

Last year, more than 300 volunteers completed over 1,300 hours of service during "Be a Good NeighBEAR."
