Center for Leadership and Volunteerism to Hold Third Annual MLK Day of Service

January 14, 2015

MACON – Mercer University's Center for Leadership and Volunteerism will hold its third annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19.

Students will volunteer at the 25th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, beginning at 7 a.m. They will then participate in the MLK Jr. Memorial March to the Macon-Bibb Government Center at 11 a.m. and the MLK Jr. Memorial Celebration that will follow.

"Service encompasses so much more than just volunteerism, and Monday's events reflect that. We'll be taking a small group of students to volunteer at the annual MLK Day breakfast at St. Peter Claver, and we hope to have a larger group of students for the march," said Hannah Vann, coordinator of community engagement at Mercer.

"Joining in the march is a different form of service – service to the community and a show of commitment and support for justice for all. It is sometimes easy to forget how hard people have worked to make a better world, and the events of this past year remind us of how hard people of all backgrounds are working to continue that good work. This MLK Day, we will be joining our community – the Macon community – in remembering and honoring past, present and future leaders of social justice."

The Center for Leadership and Volunteerism is a clearinghouse for volunteer services at Mercer, matching community organizations and agencies with student volunteers and organizations through volunteer fairs and placements. The Center also places interested students, including work-study students, in tutoring positions in Bibb County through the America Reads/America Counts Program, and works to support the University's student-led service organizations, as well.
