MACON – Mercer Law School Professors Patrick Longan, Daisy Floyd and Tim Floyd recently authored a new textbook, “The Formation of Professional Identity,” published by the Routledge Taylor and Francis Group.

The book will serve as a guide for law students on how to cultivate a professional identity that will allow them to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and to flourish as individuals. It combines what the professors have learned in many years of teaching and research concerning the lawyer’s professional identity with lessons derived from legal ethics, moral psychology and moral philosophy.

Mercer Law Professional Identity Cover“This book grew out of our experiences teaching Mercer’s required first-year course on professionalism and professional identity,” said Longan. “We hope that students and teachers alike will benefit from the lessons that we have learned along the way and that we have tried to convey in this book.”

The contents describe in depth the six virtues that every lawyer needs as part of his or her professional identity and explore both the obstacles to acquiring and deploying those virtues and strategies for overcoming those impediments.

The dedication of the book reads: “This book is dedicated to our students – past, present, and future.”
