Macon — Sen. Bob Dole, former Senate majority leader and 1996 presidential candidate, will speak at Mercer University’s Executive Forum at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Macon.
As Georgia’s premier business enrichment program, Mercer’s Executive Forum provides an opportunity for executives to hear from some of the country’s most sought-after speakers, while interacting with other business leaders.
Dole is recognized as one of the most prominent political figures of the 20th Century. Although officially retired from public office, he continues to be active both in public and private projects. He is chairman of the World War II Memorial Campaign, counsel to one of the top law firms in Washington, D.C., author of two best-selling books on political humor, a frequent guest on the late night talk show circuit and a political commentator for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Additionally, Dole has made two Super Bowl commercial appearances.
As the Republican presidential nominee in 1996, Dole cemented his reputation as an honest, respected statesman, who will long be considered one of the most powerful senators and brilliant legislators of our times. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton as a tribute to his character and contributions to the nation.
In addition to becoming the Senate majority leader and a candidate for president, he also served as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, was his party’s nominee for vice president, served as a member of the House of Representatives and chaired the Republican Party.
During World War II, Dole was platoon leader in the U.S. Army’s legendary 10th Mountain Division in Italy. He was gravely wounded on the battlefield in 1945 and was twice decorated for heroic achievement, including two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Married to Elizabeth Hanford Dole, he has earned national acclaim for his leadership on behalf of the disadvantaged and Americans with disabilities, and for his mastery of foreign affairs.
The Executive Forum is a membership-based speaker series designed to link the business community to Mercer’s Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics. Established in 1979, the Executive Forum serves as a resource for working professionals in Macon and Atlanta.
