Atlanta, Ga.—Hewitt W. “Ted” Matthews, Ph.D., dean of Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy has received the prestigious Chauncey I. Cooper Award given by the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA). The presentation was made at the NPhA annual meeting held in Las Vegas, Nev.
The award, established to honor the founder of NPhA, is the highest award given by the organization. It recognizes an individual who has shown, sustained and distinguished service to the profession of pharmacy.
In addition to his role at the School of Pharmacy, which celebrates its centennial this year, Dean Matthews has contributed to the pharmacy profession through his leadership in numerous professional organizations. He is a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, National Pharmaceutical Association, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Pharmaceutical Association, Rho Chi, Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi.
He has served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Pharmacy Association, and is past president of the National Pharmaceutical Association. He was selected by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists to serve on its Commission on Goals and has served on the Governor’s Advisory Council on Science and Technology Development. He also presently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Pharmaceutical Association Foundation.
Dean Matthews is a 1968 graduate of the Southern School of Pharmacy. He has served as dean since 1990, and previously served on the School’s faculty, as associate dean and as assistant provost of the University. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Clark Atlanta University, and master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he was a National Institutes of Health Pre-Doctoral Fellow and a Fellow of the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education.
He has earned several other awards over the course of his career. He was named an Outstanding Teacher by the Southern School of Pharmacy, and was honored with the Dean’s Award by the American College of Apothecaries for outstanding service to community pharmacy practice.
