The 2003-2004 University Commons Colloquium Series will have its fourth of six lectures on Thursday, Jan.15 at 7:30 p.m. in room 251 Stetson Hall on the Macon campus. Professor Jack L. Sammons of Mercer’s Walter F. George School of Law will speak on “A Christian Pedagogy: The Method is the Message.” He will speak for 30 minutes. Afterwards, Mercer professors Tom Scott of the History Department and Doug Thompson, University Commons, will have five minutes each to respond. Refreshments will be served.
The final two speakers will be Professor Andrew Silver of the English Department and Mercer President R. Kirby Godsey. Silver will speak on “Pluralism in a Baptist University” on Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m., room 251 Stetson Hall on the Macon campus. President Godsey will speak on “The Higher Calling of the Undergraduate Experience” on March 11 at 12 p.m. in the Trustees Dining Room on the Atlanta campus.
Transportation will be provided from Macon to the Atlanta campus. Sack lunches are also available. Both are limited and can be reserved by contacting Carol McIntosh at 478-301-2016.
“The event has been quite a success thus far,” said John Dunaway, Senior Fellow for University Commons and organizer of the event. “The lectures have been quite thought provoking and have given us a rare opportunity to talk about some of the most important aspects of who we are as a church-related institution.”
Three years ago, the Commons initiated its Lilly Grant-funded Theological Exploration of Vocation. The Commons’ primary goal is to reinforce Mercer’s dedication to helping students recognize their life’s calling in light of their faith, education and abilities.
