MACON, Ga. — The 2007 edition of U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Colleges, released today, affirmed Mercer University’s position among the ranks of leading universities and best values in the South. U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Colleges has ranked Mercer No. 9 in the South in the “Best Universities-Master’s” category, marking the University’s 17th consecutive year among the top 15 and eighth straight year in the top 10. Mercer was the only university in Georgia to be in the top 40 in the Master’s category.

The popular college guide also ranked Mercer in the top 5 in the South among Universities-Master’s for graduating students with the least debt. Graduates of Mercer had an average debt of $11,075, while graduates of two of the state’s institutions in the National Universities category, University of Georgia and Georgia State University, both had debt averages of $13,422 and $13,886 respectively.

The “Best Universities – Master’s” category is for institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs, and few, if any, doctoral programs. A total of 557 universities are ranked within four geographic areas – North, South, Midwest and West.

The 2007 rankings also place Mercer 36th nationally, along with The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute, among “Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs.” Mercer’s School of Engineering, one of only two in Georgia, celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and is expanding, with a new $14 million Science and Engineering building to be completed this academic year. In just 20 years, the School has developed a strong reputation among employers in the state and is the single largest source of engineers for Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins.
