The Bibb County School District Afterschool Programs is hosting its 8th Annual Lights On Afterschool Celebration today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church.

More than 200 Bibb County students will enjoy a variety of activities provided by Mercer University students in partnership with Education First and the Medical Center of Central Georgia. Mercer students participating in courses with a service learning component, as well as student volunteer, religious and Greek organizations, will be on hand to put on a fair for the youngsters, activities include relay races, hula hoop games, face painting and much more.

Lights On Afterschool celebrated nationwide to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for America’s children, families and communities.  In America today, 1 in 4 youth — 14.3 million children – are alone and unsupervised after school. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families, inspire learning, and provide opportunities to help young people develop into successful adults.

Lights On Afterschool is a project of the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that all children have access to quality, affordable afterschool programs. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has served as Chair of Lights On Afterschool since 2001. Begun in 2000, Lights on Afterschool has grown from 1,200 communities to 7,500 celebrations in 2006. This year, more than one million people across America will participate in a celebration!

The Bibb County Afterschool Programs, established in 1997, strives to support the mission of the Bibb County School District by providing a high quality education for all Bibb County students in a safe and comfortable environment, and to make use of all human and technological resources in preparing graduates for post-high school objectives.
