MACON — Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music and Department of Art of the College of Liberal Arts are joining together this month to raise support and awareness for an important health issue, breast cancer.

The School of Music will present the musical variety show “From Bach to Bluegrass: A Concert for the Cure” on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Fickling Hall in the McCorkle Music Building on the Macon campus.

Associate Professor of Music Martha Malone has organized the breast cancer benefit concert that will feature Mercer music faculty and regional performers presenting a diverse program of music and entertainment covering the musical genres of classical, Broadway, jazz, folk, bluegrass and others. Performers include pianists John and Jean Roberts, Georgia Grass, Atlanta dancers ACT YOUR DANCE, vocalists Martha Malone and Rich Kosowski, jazz musicians Monty Cole and Boudleaux Allen, percussionist Marcus Reddick, pianist Carol Goff, Celtic guitarist duo Joe Cullison and Jessica Whaley and others.

“Our promise is to ‘save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find the cures.’ This benefit is going to help us fulfill our promise,” said Amy Gerwig Walker, mission outreach coordinator for the Central Georgia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Tickets are $30 general admission or $15 with student I.D., and all proceeds will benefit the Central Georgia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Refreshments will be provided by Market City Café. For more information, call the Townsend School of Music at (478) 301-2748.

In addition to the performing arts, the art department will feature the special touring exhibit, “Exposure: A Creative Response to Breast Cancer,” by Virginia artist and breast cancer survivor Linda Weatherly. The exhibit is on display Oct. 6-31 in the Hardman Hall Gallery on the Macon campus. The work ranges from searingly powerful to humorous and is presented in a variety of media, from drawings and paintings to multimedia pieces.
