“The United States’ energy challenges are closely intertwined with China’s and the rest of the world,” said Penelope Prime, Ph.D., director of the China Research Center and economics professor at Mercer. “We need to tackle these challenges on many fronts and in cooperative ways. Dr. Hakes has thought deeply about these issues and has much to offer in terms of understanding the stakes.”

Dr. Hakes received his Ph.D. from Duke University and taught at the University of New Orleans. He served as assistant to the Secretary of the Interior during the Carter Administration. For most of the 1990s, Hakes headed the Energy Information Administration at the U.S. Department of Energy and has been the director of the Carter Presidential Library and Museum since 2000.
