Mercer Ph.D. Graduate Wins Outstanding Research Award

SAVANNAH— Shannon McGhee, an August graduate of Mercer University’s Ph.D. program in educational leadership, won the Outstanding Student Research Award from the Georgia Educational Research Association. McGhee is associate director of financial planning at Mercer and was in the higher education leadership track of the Ph.D. program. The award was presented at the 36th annual meeting of the GERA, which took place Oct. 21-22 in Savannah.

The paper was based on her dissertation and was titled “Financial Aid, Persistence, and the Status of the Under-Represented in Higher Education: Exploring the Relationships between Financial Aid, Persistence and Degree Attainment among African-American, Hispanic and Low-Income Students.”

The Georgia Educational Research Association promotes educational research in Georgia, encourages better training in research procedures and fosters and promotes the exchange of information relating to measurements, evaluation and research. The president of the association is Dr. Wynnetta Scott-Simmons, assistant professor at Mercer’s Tift College of Education.
