MACON, Ga. – Mercer University will honor three distinguished alumni during Homecoming 2013. The National Alumni Association will present its three annual awards to Dr. Kevin C. Greenaugh, CLA '77, A.V. Elliott, CLA '56, and Amy Griswold Martin, EGR '05, on Anderson Field during halftime of the football game against Stetson on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 4 p.m.
Dr. Greenaugh, of Glenn Dale, Md., will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award, which is presented to an alumnus/alumna who has served his/her profession in an outstanding manner and, in doing so, has brought honor to his/her person and the University. This award is presented for service to humanity and dedication which have fostered the ideals of Mercer University.
Dr. Greenaugh is the deputy assistant deputy administrator for the Office of Stockpile Management of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). He manages more than $2 billion in nuclear programs to ensure a safe, secure and reliable nuclear deterrent and is responsible for interfacing with senior officials of executive and legislative branches of government, industry and academia. An adjunct professor in the Howard University College of Engineering for more than 25 years, he is the former national president of the National Technical Association.
Dr. Greenaugh earned his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the College of Liberal Arts in 1977, before earning masters degrees from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico at Santa Fe. He went on to post-masters studies at the University of Arizona, before earning a doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland. He has also received an engineering certificate in technology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Elliott, of Macon, Ga., will receive the Meritorious Service Award, which is presented to an alumnus/alumna who has demonstrated his/her support of the Alumni Association and the University through his/her contribution of time, talents and financial resources.
Elliott is secretary and treasurer of Elliott Machine Shop in Macon, a 100-employee company he founded. He attributes much of his success to his ability to think critically at important moments, a skill he honed in his humanities courses at Mercer. Elliott gave back to the University in 2012 by endowing the annual A.V. Elliott Conference on Great Books and Ideas, coordinated by the McDonald Center for America's Founding Principles, which brings prominent senior lecturers to campus. He also gifted Mercer with the Elliott Bell Tower at the Tony and Nancy Moye Football and Lacrosse Complex on campus. The bell rings before each football game as a call for fans to enter the stadium and after each Bears' score and victory.
Elliott earned his Bachelor of Arts, with a double-major in history and Christianity, from the College of Liberal Arts in 1956.
Martin, of Marietta, Ga., will receive the Thomas Sewell Plunkett Young Alumnus Award, which is presented to an alumna/alumnus who has graduated within the last 10 years and has demonstrated continued support of the Alumni Association and the University through her/his contribution of time, talents and financial resources.
Martin is an account manager with Silverpop in Atlanta, a business that specializes in marketing automation and email marketing software. She has more than eight years of experience in the interactive industry, primarily focused on email and web development for clients, including The Home Depot, UPS InterContinental Hotels Group, BMW, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius, Aetna, Food Lion and Turner Broadcasting System Inc. Formerly, Martin worked at Engauge Digital Marketing Agency in Atlanta.
Martin earned her Bachelor of Science, with a specialization in technical communication, from the School of Engineering in 2005. As a student, she was named a Jeffrey Mavro Scholar and worked as an adviser for Mercer's Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. Her volunteer service to the University includes work as secretary of the Engineering Alumni Association Board of Directors, a member of the National Alumni Association Board of Directors and co-creator and administrator of the Mercer University Alumni Facebook Group.
