Christy Crowe Childers (’05) Brings GAWL Chapter Back to Middle Georgia

Christy Crowe Childers, a 2005 graduate of Mercer Law School and partner at Childers & McCain in Macon, has made it a priority to give back to the legal community through many different organizations and leadership positions. She currently serves as president-elect of the Macon Bar Association, co-editor of the Trial Practice Manual for the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association and president of the newly formed Middle Georgia Chapter of the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL). Childers is always looking for ways to help fellow lawyers engage in the community and give back to others.

Last year, Childers was approached by GAWL to charter a chapter in the Middle Georgia area, something the area has not had available for more than 10 years. Childers, along with 20 other women, accomplished this goal in December of 2017. Originally from Sylvester, Georgia, she says she “would love to have more of a statewide connection for our Middle Georgia women lawyers.”

Childers currently serves as president-elect of the Macon Bar Association and will assume the role of president in July of 2018. She looks forward to continuing the Macon Bar’s standing initiative of promoting law and education in the community. The Macon Bar currently provides a back-to-school drive, an essay contest and awards that reach students K- 12 in the Middle Georgia community. Once president, Childers hopes to extend the Macon Bar’s focus to college-level students in hopes of encouraging more college students to apply to law school and pursue a legal career.

After graduating first in her class from Mercer Law, Childers first practiced law at one of Macon’s oldest law firms before she and David McCain (’07) formed Childers & McCain, a personal injury law firm based in Macon.

When asked about work-life balance and its challenges, Childers says she finds it very helpful to just explain the importance of her work to her two children. She says, “When I tell them the story of the person I am helping and why they need my help, they understand why I am working so hard and they then actually encourage me to keep doing so.” Childers says her mother paved the way, “I grew up watching my mother. She had her own business, and I learned from her example.”

Childers gives Mercer Law praise for fully preparing her for a career in the field of law. “Mercer prepared us well, and Mercer also encouraged a great sense of camaraderie with our classmates.” Childers hopes to continue to promote the same comradeship for members of the Macon Bar Association and the newly formed Middle Georgia Chapter of GAWL. Childers says practicing law in Macon is an added plus of being a Mercer alumna. “The great thing about being in Macon is that the Law School is right up the hill, and if we need to reach out to them, we can.”
