Mercer Welcomes ‘Performance Today’ and Host Fred Child to Macon Campus

MACON — Mercer University is proud to welcome American Public Media's “Performance Today” and host Fred Child to the Macon campus March 20-24. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings, the five-day residency of the award-winning classical music radio show will be recording performances, talking with Mercer faculty and students and exploring the Macon art scene.

“Performance Today” is a Peabody Award-winning classical music radio show, hosted by Fred Child. It is the most-listened-to daily classical music radio program in the United States, with 1.2 million listeners on 237 stations. 

Recorded events include the Fabian concert on March 21 and the Mercer University Orchestra on March 23. All events are open to the public. A complete list of the week's events are listed below.

Monday, March 20, 4 p.m.

Master Class with Osmo Vanska

Minnesota Orchestra conductor Osmo Vanska leads the McDuffie Center String Ensemble in a 2-hour workshop in Fickling Hall. Free admission and open to the public.

Tuesday, March 21, 3:15 p.m.

Master Class with Erin Keefe

Minnesota Orchestra concertmaster Erin Keefe will lead a master class for Center violin students in the Jennings Salon at the Bell House. Free admission and open to the public.

Tuesday, March 21, 7:30 p.m.

Fabian Concert Series Presents Brahms Clarinet Quintet

In an eclectic evening featuring composers old and new, Minnesota Orchestra conductor Osmo Vanska, concertmaster Erin Keefe, and assistant principal violist Becca Albers join Amy Schwartz Moretti and sophomore cellist Atticus Mellor-Goldman to perform Brahms' great clarinet quintet. 7:30 p.m. Neva Langley Fickling Hall in the McCorkle Music Building.
