Robert Divis, a third-year law student, recently had his article “Paving the Road Less Travelled: Structuring Veterans Disability Compensation to Facilitate Readjustment,” accepted for publication into the Veterans Law Review. The article argues that the system of disability compensation used by the Department of Veterans Affairs is obsolete. Changes in medicine along with the change from a manufacturing and agricultural economy to a service and information economy have left the system unable to achieve its purpose. Divis proposes an alternative system to readjustment and rehabilitation that uses monetary compensation only as a tool to achieve independence.

Since February 2016, Divis has assisted local veterans with legal problems, cooperatively with the Mercer Law, the Emory Law Volunteer Legal Clinic for Veterans, and King & Spalding, LLP. He was awarded the Equal Access to Justice Scholarship for this work. He is a former Army officer with service in the prestigious 82nd Airborne Division during the Global War on Terror.
