Doctor of Physical Therapy Students Recognized at APTA Georgia’s ImPacT 2020 Virtual Conference

ATLANTA – Four Mercer University Doctor of Physical Therapy students were recognized Oct. 24 at the business meeting held during APTA Georgia’s ImPacT 2020 Virtual Conference.

APTA Georgia is a chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), a national professional organization representing more than 100,000 members with the goal of fostering advancements in physical therapy practice, research and education.

Michelle Dennis, a member of Mercer’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Class of 2022, was selected as a Centennial Scholar. The Centennial Scholars Program is designed to build a diverse and prepared pool of future association leaders at the chapter/section/academy and national levels.

Dennis is one of two scholars from Georgia who will join 98 others from across the country to participate in a one-year leadership program in 2021. She will also complete a capstone project for APTA Georgia.

Two other members of Mercer’s DPT Class of 2022 were recognized in association with the Centennial Scholars Program. Jillian Watson was selected as a finalist, and Carly Esposito was selected as a semifinalist.

Nathan Vassey, a member of the DPT Class of 2021, was recognized as the Outstanding Core Ambassador by the APTA Student Assembly Board of Directors for his service, which concluded during 2019-2020 academic year.  Core Ambassadors are the communication link between the Board of Directors and student physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in their respective states.

“I am proud of the achievements of each of these students,” said Jeannette Anderson, PT, DHS, clinical associate professor and chair of the Department of Physical Therapy in Mercer’s College of Health Professions. “Their commitment to the profession and the professional association is evident through their service to date. I’m confident that each will make significant future contributions benefitting the profession, patients and society.”

About the College of Health Professions

Mercer University’s College of Health Professions is composed of five disciplines: physical therapy, physician assistant studies, public health, clinical psychology, and athletic training. The College offers a doctoral-level physical therapy program, master’s-level physician assistant program, bachelor’s- and master’s-level public health programs, doctoral-level program in clinical psychology, and master’s-level athletic training program.
