Excitement Builds for Preaching Consultation featuring Diana Butler Bass

Dean Culpepper talked to Diana Butler Bass this week regarding the Mercer Preaching Consultation. She discussed her enthusiasm with him about using this event as a “think tank” where the audience would engage in open discussion about her latest research.

Dean Culpepper said, “She is working on a new book and wants to hone some of her material with us, so she is hoping for some probing questions and good discussion. Her topic is “Grounded: Finding the Spirit of God in the Spirit of the Age.” She says it will be a systematic theology for those who are “spiritual but not religious.” Sunday evening she will lay out her thinking about this book and her reasons for writing it. Monday morning she will give us one of the chapters, perhaps one entitled “Roots,” and Tuesday morning she will share her thoughts on “Preaching and Religious Language in Our Own Time.” What a great opportunity to hear Diana and talk with her about cutting edge issues that all of us are facing in our places of ministry and service!

In addition to Diana, we will be treated to music by Joe and Suzanne Hopkins (School of Performing Arts, Birmingham, AL) and presentations by Jim King, Andrea Dellinger Jones, Charley Reeb, Ronald Handlon, Chris George, and David Hull. What a strong line up! Monday afternoon you will need to choose between golf, the beach, rest, or discussion of coming lectionary texts with Peter Rhea Jones and me, and Monday evening we will worship at First Baptist Church. Daniel Vestal will preach, the First Baptist Church choir will sing, and then we will have the finest dessert reception anywhere (as you know, if you have been with us recently).”
