MACON – Dr. George Hayhoe, professor of technical communication in Mercer University School of Engineering, has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
The IEEE grade of Fellow, which dates back to 1912, is conferred by the organization's board of directors, and the total number selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of total voting membership.
This distinction is reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation.
Dr. Hayhoe is a member of the Fellows Class of 2016, recognized for his contributions to professional and technical communication and service through the IEEE Professional Communication Society.

Shaw, dean and Kaolin Chair of Engineering. “George is known internationally for his contributions to technical communication and documentation standards. The grade of Fellow is a career distinctive that recognizes his lifetime of scholarship and service.”
“Being named an IEEE Fellow is especially meaningful to me because I've worked closely with engineers and computer scientists for most of my career,” said Dr. Hayhoe. “I'm grateful for all the academic and industry colleagues and the students who've helped me become a more effective communicator.”
Dr. Hayhoe, who also served as director of the Master of Science in Technical Communication Management program for 10 years, came to Mercer as an adjunct instructor in 1996. He joined the Department of Technical Communication as a professor from 2002-2004, returned in the same capacity in 2006, and has remained on the faculty since.
He served as editor of Technical Communication, the leading journal for practitioners and the journal most frequently cited by scholars in the field, from 1996-2008, and is the author and editor of many books, articles and book chapters on technical communication and writing pedagogy. He has also frequently presented his work at local, regional and international conferences, and has received numerous awards and honors. He was recently named interim editor of theIEEE Transactions on Professional Communication journal.
Dr. Hayhoe earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of South Carolina, Master of Arts from The Catholic University of America and Bachelor of Arts from La Salle College.
