MACON – Mercer's University Honors Program recently released its fifth annual undergraduate research journal, Spires, which features essays from six students representing academic disciplines such as women's and gender studies, religion, history, accounting and journalism.
The editorial board for the fifth edition included students Jasbir Kaur, Anna Mae Kersey, Emma Peel and Alayna Williams, along with Dr. C. Jay Pendleton, vice provost of academic services, and Dr. Doug Thompson, associate professor of Southern studies.
“All undergraduate students can submit an abstract during the call for papers, which goes out in the spring. The editorial board makes choices based on the abstracts,” said Dr. Thompson. “The process allows the students to learn about academic editing and journal publication.”
The six essays, which were submitted during the 2014-2015 academic year, include:

Spires is made possible thanks to a generous financial gift from Dr. Wallace Daniel, Distinguished University Professor of History and former provost at Mercer. The expected publication date for the sixth edition is January 2017.
The University Honors Program, reserved for Mercer's most talented and promising undergraduate students, adds value to the campus experience and enhances students' preparation for life after graduation.
