MACON, Ga. – Applications are currently being accepted for Mercer University’s Upward Bound program. The federally funded program provides fundamental support to participants in preparation for college entrance as well as opportunities for them to succeed in precollege performance and, ultimately, in higher-education pursuits.
Ninth- through 12th-grade students who live in and attend high school in Bibb County are eligible for the program that serves students from low-income families and families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. Also eligible are low-income, first-generation military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education.
The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. All services provided are free of charge.
“Upward Bound is a unique opportunity for students and parents to understand the realities of and to gain assistance with preparing for college,” said Kimberly Flanders, educational specialist with the Upward Bound program.
An application for the 2013-2014 school year should be completed and returned by Friday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m.
