MACON – Mercer’s debate team opened the 2019-2020 season Oct. 17-19 at McKendree University’s Bearcat Classic in Lebanon, Illinois.

In their first-ever debate tournament, sophomores Sanaa Yusuf, a psychology major on the pre-med track, and Cameron Wade, an English and women’s and gender studies double-major, reached the octofinals in the varsity division.

“At a national debate tournament that included both Rice and Notre Dame, two Mercer debaters advanced to octofinals – and they did it at their very first debate tournament,” said Dr. Vasile Stanescu, director of debate. “The tradition of remarkable Mercer undergraduates continues.”

Additionally, returning debaters Eduardo Rubio and Taylor Cole, both seniors, reached the double-octofinals in the varsity division. Rubio is a computational science and economics double-major, and Cole is a communication major.

The team’s next tournament is set for Nov. 2-4 at Harvard University.
