MACON – Mercer Law School welcomed Alyssa Leffall as assistant dean of student affairs on Dec. 2.
Leffall previously served as special assistant to the vice president for student affairs at Texas A&M University, where she also worked as assistant director of campus life and student development, program coordinator in the Student Conduct Office and interim assistant director in the Office of the Dean of Student Life.
“We are delighted to have an assistant dean of student affairs with Alyssa’s breadth of experience on our team,” said Mercer Law School Dean Cathy Cox. “Alyssa impressed us all with her calm, deliberate approach to helping students through challenges and her clear professionalism in dealing with the nuances of law students’ experiences. Her passion for this work made her a clear choice.”
During her previous appointments at Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Commerce, Leffall served on university committees related to Title IX compliance, behavior intervention, student care and concern, alcohol and drug task force, academic integrity task force, faculty senate academic practices, leadership engagement and development (L.E.A.D.) and the Safe Spaces Ally Project.
She received the Individual Award of Distinction from Texas A&M’s Division of Student Affairs in 2017.
“I’m very excited to join the Mercer Law School family and contribute to its longstanding support of student success,” said Leffall. “The quality of the student body, as well as their welcoming nature and level of engagement have truly impressed me. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues to continue providing great student experiences at the law school and supporting students when they may need it the most.
“I’m also eager to explore Macon’s charm, from its flourishing downtown district to its museums which highlight important parts of the region’s history. I look forward to making Macon my new home,” she said.
After earning her Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, Leffall practiced law for five years in Nashville, Tennessee, and Houston, Texas. She went on to earn her Master of Science in higher education administration at Texas A&M, which led her into student affairs work. She also earned her bachelor’s degree, cum laude, at Texas A&M in kinesiology with a specialization in sport management.
Leffall is a current member of the State Bar of Texas and an inactive member of the Tennessee Bar.
She has completed Certified Mediation Training, holds the Civil Rights Investigator Level Three Certification from the Association of Title IX Administrators and has participated in annual training on a host of other issues related to student safety and wellness.
She has presented at conferences on topics related to Title IX, maximizing the graduate experience and others.
