MACON – Candi Nobles-James, M.D., recently joined Mercer Medicine in Macon, adding endocrinology to the list of specialties offered locally and by telehealth technology to rural clinics in Plains and Fort Valley.

Mercer Medicine is the primary care practice and division of the faculty practice of Mercer University School of Medicine. Its multi-specialty medicine complex is located in downtown Macon in the 43,000-square-foot facility that previously served as the location of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

In addition to primary care services, Mercer Medicine offers specialty care in the areas of cardiology, endocrinology, infectious disease, psychology and mental health, pulmonology and sports medicine.

Dr. Nobles-James has expertise in treating thyroid disorders, including thyroid cancer, in addition to areas of interest in adrenal disease, polycystic kidney disease, diabetes, hyperparathyroidism, and pituitary deficiencies and tumors. Her office is equipped with the resources and technology to provide thyroid ultrasounds and biopsies and to treat patients with insulin pumps and continuous glucose sensors.

According to the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center, there are just six adult endocrinologists based in Middle Georgia and only 22 across the southern portion of state from Macon to the Florida line. Almost two-thirds of those are concentrated in Bibb, Chatham and Muscogee counties.

“We’re delighted to have a physician with the skill and expertise of Dr. Candi Nobles-James join Mercer Medicine,” said Jean Sumner, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine. “She brings with her the ability to broaden our scope of services and address many of the diseases that are endemic to rural and underserved Georgia. She is an outstanding addition to the faculty practice and is an asset to all of rural Georgia and the entire state.”

Dr. Nobles-James earned her M.D. from Mercer University School of Medicine and Bachelor of Science in biology from Valdosta State University.

She completed an internal medicine residency at the Medical Center of Central Georgia and a fellowship in diabetes, metabolism and endocrinology at the University of Missouri.

Dr. Nobles-James served on Mercer’s faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine from 2004-2009, winning the Part-Time Faculty Member of the Year Award in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

She began the inpatient endocrine service at the Medical Center of Central Georgia and directed it from 2012-2017. Most recently, she practiced at The Jones Center for Diabetes and Endocrine Wellness in Macon, before joining Mercer Medicine.
