Mercer Music at Capricorn to Participate in Downtown Macon’s First Friday

MACON – The recently renovated Capricorn Sound Studios, now known as Mercer Music at Capricorn, officially opens for business at 11 a.m. today and will participate in tomorrow’s First Friday festivities with free live music, guided tours of the facility, and a bar that will serve beer and wine.

Mercer Music at Capricorn is a is a multi-purpose, 20,000-square-foot complex designed to leverage Macon’s music heritage to create Macon’s music future. It contains the fully restored historic recording studio, plus an additional, larger studio suitable for orchestral recording and film scoring, as well as live performances. The facility also features 1,200 square feet of interpretive space that tells the story of Capricorn and Macon’s music history through artifacts and interactive digital exhibits. The heart of the project is a music incubator featuring 12 rehearsal rooms of various sizes to facilitate the development of music talent.

The Bozwellz will be performing live from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in Studio B, formally known as the Phil Walden Memorial Studio. Guided tours of the recording studios, offices, music incubator and museum will be offered by Rock Candy Tours for $12 beginning at 5 p.m. and will continue on the hour until 8 p.m. The tours will be limited to groups of 10 and will require visitors to sign up when they arrive. Access to the Capricorn Museum, which features physical artifacts and digital interactive kiosks housing music, photos, documents and other material related to the history of Capricorn Records, will be included in the $12 tour fee. Guests may also purchase a museum-only pass for $7.

The Capricorn Museum’s normal operating hours are Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guided studio tours will be available at 10 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The museum will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.
