Mercer Players Phoenix 2MACON – Mercer Theatre, the public production season from Mercer University’s theatre program, seeks creative students, faculty/staff and community members to contribute to The Phoenix Project: Renewal. This project will be a multimedia visual spectacular that includes giant puppets, pyrotechnics, and more that will take place outdoors on Cruz Plaza in late April.

The Phoenix Project is inspired by the societal upheaval of 2020 to ask what innovations and creativity will rise from the ashes, much like the mythical bird of its title. This is an original work generated collaboratively by Mercer Theatre students, faculty, and staff that will take place live outdoors in a parade-like environment.

Anyone can participate in The Phoenix Project, regardless of discipline of study or previous experience – in fact, the Theatre Department specifically encourages people who may have wanted to participate in previous productions but felt intimidated to get involved.

“This show will need a lot of help, and it will be a team effort to make it happen. More than shows with lots of lines and traditional staging, this will be an accessible way for our community to try out theatre and contribute,” said professor Scot Mann.

“We’re looking for ‘fired up’ people to join this outdoor, creative, movement-based, fire throwing, pyrotechnic, puppet spectacular,” professor Frani Rollins noted about the fun opportunities available.

An information session will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, from 4:30-5 p.m. on Cruz Plaza to learn more about how to get involved as well as further schedules and details.

About Mercer Theatre

Mercer Theatre offers an exciting variety of opportunities for students to explore performance, technical theatre, design, stage management, playwriting, and directing. We produce in the newly developed Tattnall Square Center for the Arts in the N. Logan Lewis Theatre, as well as the expansive, 850 seat Grand Opera House in downtown Macon, GA. Typically, four major productions are produced each year (two a semester) with student showcases and other performance and technical opportunities available through university projects and the touring Broadway Series at Grand Opera House.

Join us in this challenging, exciting, artistically invigorating program where we develop theatre artists in a holistic environment. The opportunities are available the first day you arrive. Visit tattnall.mercer.edu/theatre for more.
