MACON – Jasmine Bailey, a senior in Mercer University's Townsend School of Music, has been named a winner of the 2016 National Flute Association's (NFA) Collegiate Flute Choir Competition. Bailey is one of 24 college students from across the country selected by audition to rehearse and perform with the 2016 Collegiate Flute Choir during the 44th Annual NFA Convention held Aug. 11-14 in San Diego.

“We are extremely proud of Jasmine and her accomplishment,” said Dr. David Keith, dean of the School. “She will be an excellent representative of the Townsend School of Music further highlighting the outstanding teaching and flute program at Mercer.”

The NFA holds 19 competitions to reward outstanding performers, composers, publishers, scholars and entrepreneurs. Among those are 15 performance competitions to select outstanding flutists to perform at the NFA convention.

“Applicants to the 2016 NFA Collegiate Flute Choir Competition were required to submit recordings of specific repertoire and were judged anonymously by a panel of three judges,” said Kelly Via, instructor of flute. “Jasmine has been an exceptional student.”

Bailey will graduate on Saturday with a B.A. in music with a minor in chemistry. This is her second NFA honor, as she was also a winner of the prestigious competition in 2013.

In addition to these national honors, she was nominated by the music faculty to represent the wind and percussion departments in the 2014 and 2016 Honors Recital and received the 2016 Excellence in Performance Award from the School.

Bailey was a member of the Mercer Flute Choir and principal flute of the Mercer Wind Ensemble all four years. She also performed with the University Orchestra for three years and appeared in many additional recitals and concerts.

After graduation, she will apply to medical schools as well as graduate programs in music therapy.
