Technical Communication Professors Chair IEEE ProComm Conference in Ireland
MACON – Mercer University School of Engineering faculty Dr. George Hayhoe and Dr. Helen Grady chaired this year's Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Professional Communication (ProComm) Conference, which was held in Limerick, Ireland, July 12-15.
“Mercer continues to be a key influence in the field of technical communication,” said Dr. Wade Shaw, Kaolin Professor and dean of the School of Engineering. “Having our faculty members lead the international conference in the field is evidence that we are highly respected by our peers and colleagues.”
Dr. Hayhoe, professor of technical communication, and Dr. Grady, professor and chair of the Department of Technical Communication, have spent the past two years coordinating ProComm 2015.
“Ceangail means 'connections' in Gaelic, and that's exactly what the conference's planning committee tried to provide to nearly 150 attendees on the campus of the University of Limerick,” said Dr. Grady. “The opportunity to chair an international conference of this stature brings significant recognition to Mercer University, the School of Engineering, and the Department of Technical Communication.”
Dr. Hayhoe and Dr. Grady have been active in IEEE ProComm for many years and have served on several conference committees.
In recognition of the long-term contributions of Dr. Hayhoe, who served as the society's president for two years, the conference annually awards the Hayhoe Fellowship to a graduate student to offset the cost of attending and presenting.
IEEE is the world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology, as well as a leader in publishing peer-reviewed content on technical subjects. IEEE ProComm is the only society for professional and technical communicators that is part of a larger STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) organization.
