ATLANTA – Dr. Kenyon Knapp, assistant dean for graduate studies and associate professor of counseling in Mercer University's College of Continuing and Professional Studies, has been named a member of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) Board of Directors. His five-year term will run July 1, 2014-June 30, 2019.
“I am excited and grateful to be elected to the CACREP Board of Directors,” said Dr. Knapp. “CACREP currently accredits 639 graduate counseling programs across the United States, and I have had the privilege to travel the country for the last dozen years as an accreditation site team member or chair. Having the opportunity on a national level to promote excellence in the counseling field is very satisfying.”
The CACREP Board of Directors is composed of 13 to 15 members, including at least eight counselor educators, at least two counseling practitioners and at least two public members who are not current or former members of the counseling profession. Board members serve one five-year term and are not eligible for reappointment.
CACREP evolved out of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), which developed a number of standards and accreditation-related documents to conduct voluntary accreditation of counseling programs in the late 1960s and 1970s. Established in 1981, CACREP provides leadership and promotes excellence in professional preparation through the accreditation of counseling and related educational programs.
“Dr. Knapp's appointment as one of only 15 counselor educators nationwide to serve on the counseling profession's national accrediting body is much-deserved recognition of his many years of effective work to ensure the highest standards in the field, his advocacy for counseling students and the profession, and his leadership in shaping extraordinary learning environments for counseling students,” said Dr. Priscilla Danheiser, dean of the College of Continuing and Professional Studies.
The College offers the following counseling programs on the University's Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus in Atlanta: Master of Science in clinical mental health counseling; Master of Science in school counseling; Master of Science in rehabilitation counseling; Educational Specialist in school counseling; Ph.D. in school counseling; and a certificate program in substance abuse counseling.
